The kickoff "Let's Talk Tariffs" Town Hall took place Saturday, May 17 in Taylor, MI, attended by activists and candidates from all over the state.
Susan Kokinda of Promethean Action and the MIGOP opened the discussion stressing the new Republican Party of workers and industry. Statements from Trump, JD Vance, and Treasury Secretary Bessent show that the administration is committed to a systemic change. She used examples of full expensing for new factories and the E.O. to create 1 million new apprenticeships in the skilled trades.
Auto Workers for Trump founder Brian Pannebecker described his history with Donald Trump going back to 2016, the role he played throughout 2024 in securing victory for Trump, and his continuing relationship with the White House. He gave a substantive picture of the importance of tariffs, and continually praised the “Prometheans” for the help they have given him and the role they are playing in educating people.
Tony Papert of Promethean Action painted a powerful picture of the impact of President William McKinley’s policies in turning the U.S. into a manufacturing giant at the turn of the 20th century.
The Q&A was kicked off by a 90-year-old manufacturer, who expressed his happiness that the Trump administration is taking up the question of educating the younger generation, reflecting on the well-known problem of getting competent and reliable workers today. The corruption of the existing trade union leadership also came up.
Future Town Halls
Various proposals for holding future town halls, and for penetrating more deeply into organized labor were discussed. Pannebecker said he would help reach out to UAW locals to see if they would be willing to provide facilities for future candidate debates. Stay tuned to our Ground Game newsletter for future reports.
On May 15, Promethean Action organizers and activists set up a political display outside the Automate tech conference in Detroit, MI. We had lots of fun handing out our Promethean tariff flyers. Our signs were:
The conference featured 800 different exhibitor booths, many with amazing working displays of automation. It covered all aspects of automating industrial processes, including various uses of industrial robots, etc. The conference was attended by tens of thousands of engineers, scientists, and others from all over the world, including Europe, China, Taiwan, Japan, the USA, and other areas.
Our Promethean organizers found a ready appetite among the attendees for our political materials. We spoke to many people who were pro-Trump (including those from overseas), pro-tariff, and pro-nuclear. We made a number of excellent political contacts.
On May 15, Susan Kokinda addressed the monthly meeting of the Sanilac County GOP. This is a blue collar and rural county in Michigan's 9th Congressional District. It's also home to one of the fastest growing Young Republican groups in the state. The CD, the county, and the Young Republicans are oriented to the producer outlook, Trump's economic revolution, and the new GOP as the party of workers and producers.
Trump's New Republican Party
Activists in this county were already familiar with the theme of the new Republican Party. During the 2024 campaign, they used the half-page flyer on Trump's "20 Promises," produced by Promethean PAC.
One of the leaders of the group, who follows Promethean Action closely, is an engineer who comes from a family of machine tool workers. She brought up a very important point from her personal experience. Echoing what Vice President JD Vance said at a technology conference in Washington, D.C. last month, she said that it is economically disastrous to separate the process of research and development (which stayed in the U.S.) from the actual manufacturing process (which moved overseas after NAFTA).
The Producer Identity
There was a very strong resonance to the “producer identity” from the audience. About one-third of the leadership actively follows Promethean Action and went out of their way to praise our activities.
Susan Kokinda of Promethean Action and the Michigan GOP Coalition Vice-Chair was a guest on the Blue Water Healthy Living podcast on May 21. Susan explained how her team was able to take Michigan for Trump, by shifting voters in the City of Detroit who have historically leaned Democratic. She said it was all about education of the “New” Republican Party–away from Wall Street and war, and toward workers and producers.
California is a political battleground! Over the past weeks, we reported on several very successful Promethean Action deployments, where Trump supporters are glad to see us with our signs and tables out in public.
Anti-Trump Crazies and Losers
The support continued this past week, but we also had some notable harassment in the liberal, tourist “whine country.” An organized anti-Trump protest, which evidently goes on every week at one location, was right across the street from where we set up our table. More than a dozen straggly protesters, mostly boomers and displaying barely legible signs, yelled themselves hoarse after a few hours, assisted by a clearly organized honking campaign of cars driving by.
The Promethean Spirit
Our organizers braved it out and managed to sign up a good number of new supporters. Nothing can deter the Promethean spirit!
