Harvard’s failures did not begin with DEI, critical race theory, or modern campus politics. In this Overview, Mike traces the institution’s transformation back more than 300 years and examines its conflict with the religious and economic principles that helped shape the American Revolution.

From Harvard’s opposition to George Whitefield to the influence of the Boston Brahmins and economist Frank Taussig, Mike argues that the university helped replace the American System of protective tariffs and national development with British free trade.

The story then turns to Jeffrey Sachs and the economic “shock therapy” imposed on Bolivia and post-Soviet Russia. Mike connects these policies to the neoliberal ideology that later accelerated American deindustrialization through NAFTA, the WTO, and globalization.

America is now confronting the consequences as manufacturers, shipyards, construction companies, and the power grid struggle to find skilled workers. Mike argues that the country is losing generations of industrial knowledge that cannot be replaced by academic credentials.

President Trump is advancing a different model through the Foundry School, the proposed U.S. Space Academy, and a renewed focus on science, manufacturing, competence, and national purpose.

This is the battle between Harvard’s tiny Yard and the vast potential of the American Mile.
